“Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.”

From the Rime of the Ancient Mariner

~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

When I came downstairs this morning
and looked in the basement…well…
living in southeastern Connecticut,
we have lots of water-biblical amounts!
Coleridge’s poem came to mind and
conjured up an old memory for me.

The first was being in grade school
and having to memorize poems and
speeches. Not just memorize them
mind you, memorize and then recite
them in front of the entire class.
This caused me major anxiety and
fear and probably was so traumatizing
for most kids that they did away with
this practice a few years later.

But there are good things that came
out of this…now 40 plus years later
I love to speak in front of crowds…
actually the larger the better. How
did this happen?

This is what I did…

=> I got support, asked people to
help me, talked about my fears
and anxieties about public speaking
=> I pushed past fear over and over,
practiced my lines, stopped worrying
about being perfect and was willing to
make mistakes.

When you practice your “Mindful
Robotic Parenting”…and you say..
“Please don’t speak to me that
way, it is disrespectful” you are
practicing your lines.

In the beginning, you might be really
anxious about it.The first time you say
it to your 17 year old son who is
towering over you intimidating you
with his screaming, yelling and
swears, it will be nerve racking.

But the next times, it will get
easier and easier and easier.
